IN THIS BLOG WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT HOW TO CREATE YOUR PERFECT WEDDING PLAYLIST.
The music process can be over-whelming and time consuming, and trying to create your Perfect Wedding Playlist can add to your stress levels. In this post, we hope you can walk away with a few tips and ideas that will help you create your perfect playlist…easily and quickly!
Music is the soundtrack of your wedding and you hear it through every aspect of your day! When it comes to selecting songs for your wedding we tell our couples they should think about songs from when they were dating, when they would go out dancing to, and hanging out with friends. It’s really about bringing back and sparking those memories from songs in the past you listened to that played a roll in a special event in your life on top of playing current hits.
So after you had a chance to sit down and think about songs you grew up on now its time to categorize each song into the correct folder whether its a Must-Play, Please-Play, or Do-Not Play. Keep in mind when filling out these categories you can place songs in their that aren’t dancing but songs you just love to listen to. Let’s start with the Must-Play first.
In this section we recommend choosing around 10-15 songs that are considered your favorite songs and you love to hear! The example we use to help explain what a must-play song is the song “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. You have probably attended a wedding where they played this song. My question to you is, in a two hour dance-set from 9:00pm-11:00pm. What time would it be most appropriate to play this song? If you answered later in the evening or 11:00pm, you are correct! They reason we choose this song to explain this category, is because “Don’t Stop believing” is one of those songs thats a hit, that everyone knows, but most importantly it wouldn’t have the same effect if the song was played earlier in the night. So when thinking of must-play songs for you, think about what songs are consider hits or bangers to you or songs you just really love. From their our jobs as DJ’s is to select the best time period in the night, energy level and mood to play those hits!
The second category is the please-play list. In this category we recommend you choose 15-30 songs or more if you have many different song ideas. The please-play list is meant to be filled with songs that you like but are not favorites or hits like songs from the must-play list. You are ok with your DJ playing the songs from this list if it fits the mood or genre we are in but also ok with your DJ not to play these songs if they don’t work with genre or energy level on the dance-floor. We consider songs placed in this category as fillers because they fill the slots or gaps between or building up to when your favorite hits are played!
Lastly is the Do-Not Playlist. In this category we recommend you writing down or sharing with us songs that you dislike or just don’t want to hear at your wedding. As your DJ’s are job is to protect and share your musical vision! So when we get a song request from one of your guests, we always look at your Do-Not Play List first to make sure it is not on there. If that song request is on that list we kindly inform your guests that their song is on the bride & groom’s do-not play list.
Once you finished categorizing your songs then we would recommend thinking about the style of music or genre you want to be played for your Ceremony, Cocktail Hour, and Dinner. Working with your DJ, together you will figure out the best timing to play those slower or listenings songs whether its during the Ceremony, Cocktail Hour, or Dinner later on.
We hope this month’s blog helped you get started with creating your ultimate wedding playlist!
